On July 12th, 2016, Microsoft issued a security update (MS16-088) that prevents Excel from opening a Workbook that has been exported from a cloud based application. Previously, Excel opened the workbook without using protected view security. After the update, Excel no longer opens the downloaded workbook and there is no warning or other indication that the file did not open.
